Off Road Skills courses Level One – Basic and Advanced

Level One – Basic
This two-day course is for novice or nervous road riders, without any off-road experience. This course is about overcoming fears and instilling confidence. Our primary goal is to show you how to ride big bikes like the BMW GS range in an off-road environment. These motorcycles can be intimidating if you don’t have any experience as an off road rider. We will give you the experience you need to begin to explore the world… your way.

Trail riding on this experience is on gravel, fire roads and tracks. It’s about building your confidence while riding on this type of terrain. Participants will be able to choose from a G650 XCountry, G650 XChallenge or R1200 GS for this activity.

The course teaches participants the essentials of off-road riding with the objectives of increased confidence and machine control, together with improved riding skills and ultimate enjoyment when riding off-road.

The course takes place at the magnificent 4,000-acre Walters Arena Enduro Park with its immense variety of trail and terrain. In 2007, BMW’s instructors taught over 1,000 customers to ride off-road. Some had no off-road experience whereas others had been riding for years. Participants are divided into groups, depending on their skill level meaning every participant came away having improved their riding ability.

Participants must be over 21 years of age and have a full and valid motorcycle licence for riding in the United Kingdom.

Lessons include:

  1. Lifting a bike.
  2. Safe use of the stand.
  3. Balance of the bike.
  4. Manoeuvring the bike and clutch control exercises.
  5. The standing position.
  6. Bike gymnastics
  7. Cornering off road including cone exercises.
  8. Rear braking.
  9. Front braking.
  10. Using both brakes.
  11. Safe downhill descents including engine braking, stopping on a hill and then starting on a hill.
  12. Safe ascents and hill recovery.

How much?
The two-day Level One Basic Off Road Skills Courses cost £449 for participants riding either a BMW G650 XCountry, G650 XChallenge or a R1200 GS. All course participants are grouped according to riding ability and must have a good level of fitness. The price includes two-days of instruction, motorcycle hire, third party insurance, fuel, meals, refreshments and a certificate of completion. It does not include accommodation or evening drinks.

Level One – Advanced
The Advanced Level One course is for motorcyclists who have ridden off road before or ride regularly on the road by covering a considerable annual mileage. Mountain bikers are also suited to this course. This course takes all of the skills from the Basic course to the next level and adds more lessons to get you riding off road. Participants choose to ride either a G650 XCountry, G650 XChallenge or R1200 GS for this activity, and will have the opportunity of riding more adventurous trails. This is a course for those who want to get an extra bit of fun from the two-day course.
