The highly-successful Off Road Skills courses have been running for eight years, headed up by six-times Dakar Rally competitor Simon Pavey. In this time, it has reached almost four thousand customers who have all experienced the world of BMW and BMW off road.

The Off Road Skills courses started back in 2000, when Simon Pavey and John Deacon began a small pilot off road training programme based at the magnificent 4,000-acre Walters Arena site. Using a small fleet of BMW F650 GS and F650 GS Dakar motorcycles, the duo only ran five schools which catered for BMW Motorrad dealers, press and just a few customers.

Then in 2001, Simon and John set-up the school as a business which offered courses directly to customers. With six courses lined-up, the courses booked up and achieved over 250 customers in its first year. Then in August 2001 John Deacon was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident while competing in the Master Rally. With two schools still remaining, Simon took the lead and fulfilled their promise by completing a full season of Off Road Skills courses. Simon then took over the business with his wife – Linley – in October 2001.

With a fresh look at the business, Simon and Linley took the business from strength-to-strength. In 2002 a Level Two course was added to give customers a new experience with BMW Off-Road Skills. Therefore 290 customers had their first off-road experience with BMW Motorrad in south Wales. Every year the Off Road Skills courses grew in popularity. In 2003 over 320 customers participated, over 370 in 2004, then a massive jump to over 720 in 2005, and over 920 in 2006.

The key to the success of the Off Road Skills team is the people involved. The instructors and the support team. Simon Pavey is a highly-respected rider and businessman and prides himself in choosing the best instructors who have a strong credibility in the industry. They must be able to ride a large BMW GS motorcycle to an impressive level and have the capability of dealing with all levels of customers to deliver the course programme. All of the instructors have extensive knowledge of BMW motorcycles, accessories and lifestyle as well as the world of enduro.
